amanzimtoti n2 suicide bid

A terrifying scene unfolded on the N2 near Amanzimtoti on Friday morning when a mother allegedly attempted to end her life together with her little baby. The drama was captured on a motorist’s dashboard camera as he approached the Doonside off-ramp around 10h10.

“I was travelling south along the N2, and just before the Doonside off-ramp I saw a man rush into the road, waving his arms trying to stop the oncoming traffic,” said the motorist who preferred to be called only as Warren.

“I stopped completely, turned on my hazards and blocked the lane. When the man, woman and child were out of the road, I pulled over to the side and then called the CCPO, who contacted Amanzimtoti SAPS. The police arrived within 12 minutes. I left my details with them in case they wanted to call me for a report.”

Fortunately Warren had a dashcam on his vehicle, on which the incident was recorded. Warren left the scene shortly afterwards and didn’t engage directly with the man or woman. Before he left, the police allegedly told him that the fracas was related to a domestic dispute.

“All I got from the cops was that the mother wanted to end her life and didn’t want the father of her child, the man, to have the child,” said Warren. Attempts to elicit confirmation from Amanzimtoti police were unsuccessful as the station spokesman was on leave.
