Two sharks board staff drown off Richards Bay after boat accident

Two people have drowned after a KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board boat capsized off Newark beach in Richards Bay.

The board issued a statement this morning saying the crew had been servicing shark safety gear at the time.

Police say five people had been onboard the boat.

Spokesperson Thembeka Mbele confirmed that two bodies have been recovered, while two other people were rescued from the water.

“Police divers and rescuers are still searching for the fifth person,” said Mbele.

Police, port authorities and the National Sea Rescue Institute are currently scouring the area.

The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon says a helicopter is also being used in the search.

“NSRI Richards Bay, emergency services, police and a Portnet helicopter are currently on scene. At this stage it is an ongoing rescue operation,” he said.

Meanwhile, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala is expected to visit the beach this morning. A statement on Facebook says he will be accompanied by sharks board CEO Mthokozisi Radebe.
