N2 horror crash, bakkie driver named

The man who was arrested following the head-on collision on the N2 near Umzumbe last Sunday has been named as Anastasios Peyios (63) from Ramsgate.

He was released on bail of R5 000 after a court appearance on Monday. The case was postponed to May 18, South Coast Herald reported.

According to Natasha Kara, speaking on behalf of KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions spokesman Sophy Noko, the docket had contained evidence only relating to the charge of driving under the influence of liquor and this was the only charge initially placed on the charge sheet at Southport police station.

“Please note that it has been placed on the court record by the prosecution that additional charges could be added to the charge sheet. The prosecution has been in consultation with the SAPS to investigate evidence so that charges relating to the deaths of the eight dead can be considered,” she said.

Eight members of the same family perished in the collision while Peyios himself was not hurt.
