Sorry for what?
Verulam – The word sorry is synonymous with calming an explosive tempers storm but to a Verulam man accused of raping his 10-year-old step daughter it became the direct opposite.
He was brutally assaulted by enraged community members after revelations that for the past five years he had been sexually abusing his stepdaughter after her mother died.
A community member who was present during the confrontation has narrated to KZN WATCH how at the mention of the word sorry, the community latched onto the suspect and beat the pulp out of him.
Keegan [not his real name] said he came to the accused’s place were a crowd was gathered baying for the accused stepdad’s blood.
“I’m sorry, I…” the 43-year-old suspect said apologising, before being abruptly cut off by a slap from a furious woman sparking a free for all assault on the man, said Keegan.
He was brutally manhandled before the Reaction Unit South Africa team rescued him.
He was taken to the police who send him to hospital where he allegedly escaped but was later rearrested.
“The community was infuriated with the fact that the accused thought that for his numerous horrific acts on the poor girl, he could simply say sorry. He is a monster who deserves to die for the grave sins on his stepdaughter,” Keegan added.
Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, police spokesperson said police can confirm that a case of rape and sexual assault was opened at Verulam police station.
“It has been transferred to Phoenix FCS for investigation. A stepfather was arrested for repeatedly raping a 10-year-old victim in Verulam. It is alleged that the victim’s mother died when she was four-years-old. He will be charged and will appear in court soon,” Mbhele said.
