Two Durban robbers have taken hijacking to another level after they targeted and successfully hijacked and disarmed two on-duty police officers in Umbilo on Monday.
According to provincial police spokesman, Lt Colonel Thulani Zwane, the police officers were patrolling along Bulwer and Joseph street in the Umbilo area when they were approached by two men, who pretended to be in need of assistance.
“As the police stopped the van, they were held up at gunpoint and a suspect disarmed both officers of their state firearms. They then pulled the police officers out of the vehicle and drove away with the state vehicle,” he explained.
The police officers managed to walk to the nearby Stella Sports Club to seek assistance.
The police vehicle was later found abandoned at Clearance in Umbilo area. No arrests have been made as yet.
Umbilo police are investigating cases of carjacking and robbery.
The case has raised alarm amongst the public, one Facebook comment read: “It just bring more woes to the public who put their trust in police officers to help reduce the prevalence of hijackings but end up witnessing the hijackers preying on them too.”
