Controversial Durban Muslim scholar and activist shot outside court

Durban – Yousuf Deedat, a controversial Muslim scholar and activist, is recovering in hospital after being shot in an apparent hit on Wednesday morning.

He was shot near the Verulam Family Court where he was supposed to attend.

Security company Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) reported that they received reports of the shooting happened just before 8h30 and dispatched their personnel.

“On arrival, the victim Yousuf Ahmed Deedat was found lying face down on the pavement. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to his head,” said RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram.

“According to witnesses, he was walking towards the court when he was approached by a man who drew a firearm and shot him once before fleeing the vicinity on foot.

“A security officer who witnessed the incident pursued the suspect, who got into an awaiting white Mazda and sped off.

Contrary to social media reports that Deedat had died, it is understood that a team of surgeons managed to stabilise him and he was airlifted to an undisclosed hospital for urgent medical care.

A family friend said Deedat was stable and recovering in a private hospital.

The Deedats family’s views on Hinduism and Christianity have also attracted a lot of controversy.

Police spokesman Col Thembeka Mbele said the motive for the attack was unknown, adding that a case of attempted murder was being investigated.
