Durban – Four people were injured when service delivery protests on the N2, near Shakashead, turned violent on Sunday night. North and southbound lanes had to be closed off to traffic after community members began throwing rocks and stones at passing vehicles.
Several cars were left with shattered windscreens and windows.
It is alleged that residents took to the streets after they were left without electricity from the storm the night before.
Paul Herbst of IPSS Medical Rescue said the four were seated in the vehicles and were injured when rocks were thrown onto the vehicles.
In a separate incident, earlier in the day, 18 people were injured in a multiple vehicle pile up on the N3 at Hammarsdale.

Annine Siddall, ER24 spokesperson, said the 18 were passengers of a bakkie that collided with at least four other vehicles.
“The patients sustained minor injuries and six were transported to a nearby hospital by ER24. Twelve more were treated and transported to nearby hospitals by other emergency services on scene,” Siddall said.
